BTC Chief Specialist Mr. Koichi Suzuki participated in a training course held by Canadian OPG (Ontario Power Generation) October 15- November 17, 2006. The aim of the training was to acquire the leadership skills necessary for advanced administrators who lead managers of power plants. Training included theoretical training as well as two separate visits to the power plant for observations, etc.

Training participants were accepted from both inside and outside the OPG organization. Trainees also come from countries that currently do not possess the CANDU type reactor. This time, among the 8-members who participated in the OPG training, 6-members were from outside the OPG organization. Of those participants, most were middle-aged managers from the United States, Romania, and Japan.

The training course, 5 weeks of classroom sessions as well as power plant visits, also included "evening sessions". During these sessions, various actual problems that trainees encountered in the work place were made into case studies and discussed. The schedule was demanding on those involved, however, learning about leadership at a power plant with good operating results as well as being able to learn ways which differ from one's own company proved to be a beneficial experience.

The lecturers were private consultants from outside the OPG organization. An interactive lecture style based upon the study material was used. Trainees were at liberty to discuss the material, etc. Some mentors also attended and counseled the lecturers. They offered suggestions to trainees and also acted as facilitators.
